Communications Changes on Campus
The University is pleased to announce the completion of an upgrade to
the communications systems on campus. The data wiring for ResNet has
been upgraded, cable TV and WiFi have been added to the undergraduate
residence halls, voicemail boxes will be available for all students,
both on and off campus, and improvements to cellular telephone service
are in the final stages.
To understand these changes and how they will affect your communication
with students, please review the following:
*Voice Mail Boxes*: Students living in the undergraduate residences
will no longer have a University-provided telephone in their room unless
they request one. Instead, all students, both on and off campus, will
be provided with a personal voice mail box that they will be expected
to check on a regular basis. The voice mail boxes are part of the standard
University voice mail system and will be published in the University
phone book and in the online University directory. Further details on
the new student voice mail boxes will be published on the OIT Telecommunications
web site at http://oit.nd.edu/telecommunications.
* Cellular Telephones*: We are pleased to let you know that the
University has reached agreements with Verizon and Cingular cellular
telephone service providers to improve their cellular telephone coverage
on campus. We expect this project to be completed in October. More information
on carriers and services can be found at http://oit.nd.edu/mobile.
Students are being presented the option to publish their cellular telephone
numbers in the University phone book and in the online University directory.
In the past, we have only allowed students to provide “local contact
numbers” which are within our local area codes. That is no longer the
case since student cellular numbers will be from around the country.
The University has negotiated low long distance rates when calling from
University telephones and so your department should not incur large
charges due to you calling students when necessary at their long distance
cellular number.
* Email*: You will be able to contact students using email and
LISTSERV lists the same way as you have in the past.
Please refer to http://oit.nd.edu/telecommunications
for answers to all of your questions regarding the upgraded communication
services for students or contact the OIT Help Desk at 574-631-8111.
